Welcome to this edition of RISE!
H
ere in "RISE" - The Multimedia Magazine, we intend to provide a forum for sharing healing information and resources.  There are many wonderful organizations, businesses, and people in our community that have been serving our needs for some time.  Yet, there are still so many issues that need to be addressed in order for us all to have greater wellness, awareness, and recover from the destructive behaviors that hinder our wellness.

We promise to keep it simple, provide useful healing solutions, and have as much fun while being as enlightening as we possibly can.  We look forward to growing with our community, and hope you will join us by contributing your stories and information!

As a bonus, we would like you to listen to a music mix done by D.J. "Kind Brother"

WELLNESS

Dr. Luther A. Virgil is a practicing physician with a specialty in Internal Medicine and a sub specialty in Infectious Diseases. He is currently the CEO of the National Minority Clinical Research Association.  He is an HIV specialist and is a nationally renowned health education speaker and has given hundreds of presentations in the area of Infectious Diseases for the top 50 pharmaceutical companies and an assortment of Federal and State agencies and community-based organizations. As a member of several panels established for experts in the care of those infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Dr. Virgil has taken part in the review of therapies and therapeutic guidelines for the treatment of HIV related disease.

The National Minority Clinical Research Association (NMCRA) is dedicated to addressing diseases that disproportionately affect minority populations and reducing racial and ethnic disparities in health care prevention, clinical treatment, and health related research outcomes. Many health trend reports have concluded that the overall health of the American population has improved over the past few decades. However, studies have shown that racial and ethnic minorities are not always represented in these statistics due to patients’ limited access to care and the lack of culturally “relevant” clinical information for providers and consumers.

Dr.Luther is passionate about empowering minority communities with the latest medical information, and we look forward to him sharing lots of great information with you – the viewer – here in the WELLNESS section – of  “RISE”.  We are proud and happy to have NMCRA support “RISE” –The Multimedia Magazine with the best medical information that we can provide.  Of course, this information is no substitute for actual medical attention and advise from your own medical professionals.  We hope we can help you to participate in your wellness more fully by empowering you, through this exciting medium, with culturally competent medical information.

AWARENESS

L'dia Men-Na'a Muhammad, Nameorologist/Aromatherapist is a Life Path Awakening Empowerment Consultant.

Among other things, she has been educating college age students 18-24 years old about the ways HIV is transmitted and the "at-risk" behaviors that can compromise their health.  That includes information on healthy relationship building, male and female condom demonstrations.  Here in "RISE", L'dia will also interact with our viewers with information about how to use our names, birthdates, and other fun stuff to become more empowered!

She shares with us here, and on her website (www.healthwealthandromance.com)  therapeutic techniques we can use to deal with stress.  By identifying the origins of stress and its effects on self, family and community, we will create an atmosphere conducive to raising our level of self-awareness and community awareness.  Sister L'dia is often complimented here by her young and gifted son, Asad Khan, (www.crystaljourneymeditationbyasad.com) with enlightening information about how to use crystals, auras, and animal guidance.

RISE is very happy to have L'Dia and Asad to help us look at some fun and interesting ways to become more aware of ourselves and the world around us!
RECOVERY

To look at author and motivational speaker Denise Stokes, one might never imagine her to have once been a homeless woman begging for food or drugs in a crackhouse.  Her story of redemption is perfect for the kind of flavor that "RISE" intends to bless you with regularly!

The depth of the experiences that Denise has had in her life, as well as her diverse talents, make it difficult to know what to ask her to share with us about first!!  Denise is a nationally recognized motivational speaker, spoken word artist and author who uses her background and life experience to empower and motivate diverse groups. Since the 1980's, Denise has also helped put a face on heterosexual HIV infection by speaking out as a person living with the virus.

The beautiful and dedicated Ms. Stokes has a new book called "From the Crackhouse to the White House" that eloquently shares the intimate details of her personal metamorphosis, but you can get an exclusive "inner-view"  about her recovery from drug addiction, and the amazing life she has carved out for herself by transcending her life from a useless holding pattern to a defining force!

Denise exudes the hope that recovery from destructive behaviors and patterns, like drug addiction, is possible for all.  Though she is more often than not sharing about her incredible journey living with HIV, we are very happy that she is sharing her story about recovery  with you - here in "RISE".
